NEW YORK, March 4, 2019 /PRNewswire/ — This week New York City’s Commission on Human Rights (NYCCHR) released new guidelines prohibiting discrimination based on hair, hair types and hair styles. The new guidelines under the New York City Human Rights Law (NYCHRL) provides legal options to people who are discriminated against because of hair, style and length associated with race, culture or cultural identity. Beleza Natural, named one of NYC’s top hair salons specializing in curly hair, is leading the charge in the empowerment of women by helping them embrace their natural curls and firmly stands with the new NYC guidelines that people should not be discriminated against based on their curl pattern.
Trusted "Curl Masters" and highly renowned entrepreneurs Zica Assis and Leila Velez built the first Beleza Natural Salon in Rio de Janeiro in 1993 to combat the racism and stigma faced in the workplace as Afro-Brazilian women with natural, curly hair. Spurred into action by the lack of effective hair products for their curly and kinky hair types, the pair of business mavens filled an evident gap in Brazilian hair care by creating products and treatments to transform the way women care for their naturally curly hair.
"At Beleza Natural, all curls, coils and kinks are welcome! It’s unfair to tell a person that his or her hair is unacceptable and penalize them professionally and financially for it." says Leila Velez, co-founder of Beleza Natural. "We are very proud to be contributing to the natural hair movement in NYC helping people to embrace their curly and textured hair without fear. Hair is identity and should be respected."
In 2018, Assis and Velez, debuted its first U.S. Beleza Natural Salon in the heart of Harlem, New York City. A longstanding champion of haircare, the salon stands out for its unique cocktail of natural hair treatments and styling services, product research and development, and customer care. The new location is not only a salon, but a completely integrated experience of self-love and empowerment through beauty education — staff and clientele come together to celebrate natural hair and customers leave feeling beautiful, but empowered through knowledge to better care for their hair.
