Shoma Uno topped the men’s podium, Rinka Watanabe claimed the women’s gold in her Grand Prix debut, and Riku Miura and Ryuichi Kihara won their first pairs title of the series Saturday in a dominant showing for Japan at Skate Canada International.
In a 1-2 finish for the Japanese men, reigning world champion Uno climbed one spot on the leaderboard to beat short program winner Kao Miura in the second round of figure skating’s Grand Prix series in Mississauga.
Uno received 183.17 for his free skate to total 273.15, with 17-year-old Skate America winner Miura finishing on 265.29 and Italy’s Matteo Rizzo third with 251.03.
“I’m delighted to win,” said Uno, who opened with a quadruple loop and included four other quads in his routine. “Miura is improving incredibly fast, so I have to work hard to make sure I’m not left behind.”
The 20-year-old Watanabe surged from sixth to the top of the women’s podium in the free skate, earning 134.32 points to total 197.59.
She opened her routine with a triple axel and followed up with four more clean triples to finish ahead of American Starr Andrews on 191.26 and South Korea’s You Young with 190.15.
“I performed to the best of my current ability,” Watanabe said. “I was able to skate calmly without getting overwhelmed. I’m just really happy I won.”
Former world No. 1 Rika Kihira, who is working her way back from an ankle stress fracture, scored third-highest with her free skate to finish fifth overall on 184.33.
Beijing Olympians Miura and Kihara backed up their short program victory with the top free skate to total 212.02 for their maiden Grand Prix victory. Emily Chan and Spencer Akira Howe of the United States were second on 186.48, with Italy’s Sara Conti and Niccolo Macii just 0.3 point back in third.
“When I first competed in the Grand Prix series, I thought winning a medal was a dream or simply impossible. I’m so happy,” Kihara said.
